Ballston Beach, Late Afternoon

The inspiration for this major piece is the incredible beauty of Ballston Beach, Cape Cod, at the end of a glorious Cape Cod summer day. The golden light of the late afternoon sun reaches the east-facing beach and crosses the dunes from the west, leaving the beach in deep blue-black shadow shot through with patches of sunlight. I painted this very rapidly with long brush strokes to catch the sweep and rhythm of the swathes of light and shadow on the dunes and beach.
